Shave for a Cure

Today was a wonderful Friday- very relaxing! Jo and I walked down to Queen Street this morning but all I bought was a New Zealand diving magazine and a pack of markers. Oh yeah, we also got gelato on the walk back up the hill. Then, I spent the afternoon reading my book (Sing You Home by Jodi Piccoult), and I ended up finishing it.

Olly’s cousin is here for the night so about twenty of us went out for pizza, which was really good because we all shared large pizzas and each only had to put in a few bucks.

After that was the “Shave For a Cure” party here at International House. It’s a fundraising party to benefit Leukemia research where people get money from their friends and family if they pledge to shave their heads. I ended up donating 50$, because a few of my friends signed up to shave their heads, girls included! It was amazing to see so many boys and girls shave their heads, all for a good cause. Clive, our resident manager, who pretty much lives with his family in a house next to IH and runs the place, even shaved his head. I guess his niece who came up to stay with him from Christchurch (because her house was ruined) has leukemia. It’s so great to see so many people come together for such a great cause. One of the kids here DJed the party and there was food and drinks there as well. I wish I had the guts to shave my head, but I just currently don’t have it in me, which is why I gave money to the people that did. All of the RAs shaved their heads, except for one girl. My friend Olly spontaneously got his head shaved, and collected about $100 in the five minutes right before he decided to do it. Now there’s about 15 bald headed kids running around!

Now it’s raining, possible tornado warning/rain all day tomorrow, so it’s going to be a pretty dull weekend.
