Day 53

Today started out great, by going to zumba with my friend Jo. Then, I walked down to the electronics store to get a cable so we can play our ipod in the van, and did some laundry to get ready for our trip. So much goes into planning it! After lunch, Dave got here and we rented him some AUUC scuba gear for the trip. A while later we walked over to Sky City, which is home of the famous Auckland Sky Tower. We didn’t do the package that I mentioned yesterday, but we did eat at the revolving restaurant. The food was amazing!! I had smoked duck and mushroom tart to start, which was smoky and delicious on a sort of large cracker with sun dried tomato mustard and microgreens on the top. For my main course I wanted something local to New Zealand, so I got roast lamb with red wine sauce on top of buttery spinach and mashed kumara (delicious sweet potato I’ve mentioned before). Lamb cooked like that is amazing! Almost better than steak. Oh yeah, I’ve started eating meat again! \Then, for dessert I got a plate with chocolate mousse, a cookie, and hazelnut ice cream decorated all pretty. Honestly, the food was amazing. I couldn’t tell if the wine that we got was starting to get to me or if it was because the restaurant literally moves around the top of the tower but I’m not sure I could spend a long time up at the top of a tower that spins (it moves all the way around in about an hour).

After that we went downstairs to gamble, and I learned how to play roulette. Turns out that I’m not half bad. I ended up doubling my money and left with $60 more than I started. The trick to gambling is to know when to walk away—and the proper time for that would be when you’ve got more chips than you started with. Overall, I had a great evening and would LOVE to have a dining experience like that again (although maybe not in a spinning restaurant) and I would love to try roulette or another table game again (although I definitely would not make a habit out of it).

Tomorrow morning we pick up the campervan, get some groceries, and head out!!
