Today was a great day, although breakfast wasn’t! I tried spaghetti on toast for the first time ever! It’s like gross canned spaghetti with watery tomato sauce that you slop onto a piece of toast. I must say, you guys aren’t missing anything! I HAD to try it though, because all the Kiwis swear by it.
I had my first philosophy class today- Intro to Logic. I realized shortly into class that my professor is really smart (he also wrote our textbook!) but he’s also been teaching quite a long time. He makes jokes during class while he’s explaining very boring things like conjunctive propositions and the parts of an argument. I love to laugh but this professor is the only person in the room that laughs at his own jokes! I must say I am impressed that he tries to get us to laugh nonetheless.
I also had Coastal and Marine Geography which I almost fell asleep in, Physics of the Atmosphere and Ocean which was amazing, and Marine Ecology. Coastal and Marine Geography was so dull because it was about how waves form and the differences between deep water and shallow water waves. I’ve heard this in multiple other classes! Physics was so interesting because we learned about solar radiation and how much of this energy is absorbed, how much is reflected into space, and how clouds form based on energy budgets. Some of it was a little over my head but if I just sat and thought about it a while, I would really start to like learning about this stuff! Marine Ecology is also a great class- my professor is an Irish man who skips through all the words in his slides and stops and explains all the pictures of really cool sea creatures. My kind of professor!
Reflecting, I have all older male professors this semester. Interesting.
We played more games today, learned how to use the printer, and met some more friends on my floor that had just moved in. I LOVE living in international House.
I also bought a sketchpad, a finepoint black marker, and a set of nice colored pencils because I feel like I really need a creative outlet. This might just be what I need! It was very inexpensive (less than $20) because all of the art students are buying similar items for their art classes.
I spent some time today also thinking about spring break. Since we have 18 days off, I’d like to go on a liveaboard dive trip, where you travel and stay on a boat for 7-16 nights, diving at various places along the way. This would be great for me because I wouldn’t have to worry about bringing dive gear to various cities along the coast, and I can get to know other people on the boat very well. I just have to make sure there is a trip leaving during my break.
I was talking to another girl here at International House, Jo, from Australia, about travelling around. We aren’t sure what we want to do this weekend yet. We might go blackwater rafting through the glowworm caves in Waitomo (to the west), or bungee jumping at Taupo lake, or to the Hot Springs and to see a Maori cultural performance in Rotoarua. I’d also really like to go shark cage diving while I’m here. Gisborne Point (on the east coast of the north island) is the first town in the world to see the sun rise, so I’d LOVE to go there for a night to watch the sunrise, and maybe do some diving. The opportunities here are truly very exciting! Until then, back to homework!
(The pictures included this week are from a Maori building where some of my classes are.)
